486-Make it Yourself-Flour Tortillas
In my Make It Yourself series I will show (tell) you how to make common items at home instead of buying them and ingesting seed oils etc. Today I will be talking about tortillas, flour tortillas mostly, but I will touch on corn tortillas also.
Flour tortillas are very inexpensive and easy to make plus they can be frozen for later use making it a worthwhile project to explore. Ingredients are simple, flour, salt, lard, that’s it! Juxtoppose to the leading brand Mission which contains 20 plus ingredients, including seed oils
Flour Tortillas
Make simple tortillas with flour, water, lard, and salt for delicious burritos, quesadillas, tacos, etc.
Ingredients
- 3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
- roughly 1 cup pork lard
- 1 cup 200-degree water
- 2 tsp salt
Instructions
- Make the dough by adding flour and salt to a large work bowl, and mixing with a Danish dough whisk.
- Add lard, then using your hand massage it into the flour until the lard is in little pieces maybe pea size.
- Slowly drizzle in hot water mixing then add more until consistency reaches a moist but not wet or dry ball, should not have too many cracks or be sticky.
- Cover and let rest for 1 hour.
- Weigh out dough balls or estimate, I like large golfball sizes. Place dough balls on parchment lined baking sheet, cover, and let rest for at least an hour but these can be made ahead and covered then placed in the refrigerator.
- When ready to cook heat a large skillet, cast iron, or similar (avoid nonstick) to medium heat, then roll out tortilla balls and drop them on a hot griddle or pan. Cook for 1-2 minutes or until some brown spots appear. Pop any bubble with a fork. Flip nad repeat.
