My Basic Dog Food Recipe

Here is the basic recipe I use, sometimes it changes depending on what type of protein I feel is the best value, both for the dog and me. Feel free to change it up, just be sure you watch the dog carefully to make sure he or she is thriving. do not switch dogs to a home made food quickly, make the transition over 4-5 days. I also supplement with Dogzmes powder and a Pet tab.

Ingredients:

  • 4 lbs chicken breasts or chicken thighs, cooked and shredded or chopped
  •  5 cups brown rice cooked per the package instructions...will make a GIANT batch of rice
  • 1 1/2 cups coconut oil, melted
  • 1/2 lbs flax seeds, ground
  • 1 cup bone meal powder (food grade) optional
  • 1/2 cup raw chica seeds
  • 2 lbs broccoli and cauliflower mix, cooked briefly, chopped
  • 1/4 c parmesan cheese
  • 6 eggs, beaten
  • 4 cups raw rolled oats
  • 2 large sweet potatoes, cooked mashed

Method:

  1. In a large work bowl add all ingredients and mix very, very well.
  2. Cool mixture to room temperature before storing in fridge or freezer.

NOTE:

I like to make about 10 lbs, and about 4 lbs will be meat, the rest is rice, oats, vegetables, eggs.  Reserve some broth if chicken is poached to moisten up the food.

I feed 6 cups per day for the doberman who is 85 pounds currently. He LOVES this food.

VARIATIONS:

Sometimes I will use ground pork and chicken or even ground beef and chicken. I tried canned salmon but he did not dig it, and it smelled awful.
