Many of you have been e-mailing me regarding the 60 Minutes story that aired the night detailing the widespread fraud in the olive oil business. While this is nothing new, many people had not been aware until seeing the 60 Minutes piece. Some 70% or more of extra virgin olive oil sold in supermarkets here in the USA is phony, compliments of the Italian Mafia!
The FDA simply does not regulate this industry enough to root out this fraud. Olive oil gangsters have been shipping this “extra virgin” olive oil to the USA for years, much of it is bogus. In every supermarket in the country bottles of phony oil are regularly sold as extra virgin.
Now paying for extra virgin olive oil and getting a lesser grade is certainly a rip off, but when you consider what oil they are selling you-namely cheap nut and seed oils, it becomes a potentially life threatening offense.
Some people with nut allergies can be consuming nut oils they thought were olive oil and become violently ill. It can kill. Aside from the allergy potential, some of these gangsters mix in GMO laced soybean and canola oil into these phony oils which again is really criminal and deceptive. You pay for extra virgin because you want healthy, high-quality oil…not GMO laced crap.
I have been offering Corto California-grown and bottled extra Virgin Olive oil for years now not only because the quality is so high, but it’s free of the tainting in so many others. I exclusively use this oil in all our pasta sauces that are sold commercially. It is so much better then the foreign oils…maybe it’s because the ones I’ve tasted are not even extra virgin olive oil. You see the problem…olive oil corruption is so bad you cannot trust anything coming from over seas.
